Eduventures Development Learning Collaborative

DEVThe Development Learning Collaborative (DEV-LC) focuses on common challenges development divisions face, including annual giving, campaign planning and management, development services, development strategy and organization, individual and institutional giving, and staff management. DEV-LC provides insight and direction to identify best management practices, benchmark performance, and improve core processes through research, analysis, and networking opportunities.

DEV-LC provides Collaborative Research, Custom Research, and opportunities for interactions with our analysts and with decision-makers at peer institutions.

DEV-LC’s recent and upcoming Collaborative Research studies include:

Transitioning Donors to Higher Gift Levels, Part I: Institutional Practices
Higher education institutions strive to increase the value of donor relationships by transitioning donors from annual giving to special/leadership gifts to major gift-level contributions. This study will help member institutions understand the patterns of contact and the timeline involved in cultivating and accelerating gift donors toward a first-time major gift.

Transitioning Donors to Higher Gift Levels, Part II: Donors’ Perspectives
Part II of the Transitioning Donors research will focus on donors’ experiences during the cultivation process and the key factors that elevated their giving to major-gift level. Analyzing the donor survey in combination with the institution-provided data about the donors’ cultivation will help member institutions understand the interaction between cultivation strategy and donor behavior.

Benchmarking Staffing and Technology Investments
Every advancement office has a set budget with which to accomplish its mission and strives to maximize performance based on that amount. This study will collect data on staffing and technology investments relative to revenue levels to help development organizations evaluate their staff and technology allocations and make the appropriate reallocations.

Some examples of topics covered by Custom Research include:

  • Annual Fund: Communicating With Younger Alumni

  • Staffing and Budgeting for a Campaign

  • Prospect Research: Factors and Models for Identifying Major Gift Prospects

  • Funding Mechanisms for Development Operations

  • Principal Gifts Structure and Management

  • Recruiting and Retaining High-Quality Fundraising Staff
